Potty training tips are gold, right? When it comes to potty training, it is never easy – but it can get easier. If you have this task ahead, sure, we all have to admit you are about to deal with some challenging times but, on the other hand, soon you will be able to say the big goodbye to diapers, so woo-hoo!
Below are some potty training tips to help.
We combined the experience of experts and super moms. Some of them may even sound silly, yet, with every child being unique, they resonate differently with different tactics. Choose wisely and good luck!
1. Arm yourself with loads of patience.
Don’t expect your toddler to be vocal about their potty needs. At first, you will have to take them to the toilet without any results. You may think your little one wants to pee and spend 20 minutes waiting for them to do nothing eventually. It takes a really long time until children get used to the potty terms & conditions. It is easier with #1 but when it comes to the big #2, potty training can last up to a year. Nothing to be worried about!
2. Get some visuals.
Potty training has been in the focus of numerous picture books, many of them written and drawn with a lot of humour. Nope, the picture books won’t make the potty training process successful immediately but they can certainly help your child understand what’s going on and why do they have to stop playing to do what they used to do in diapers.
3. Use the pep talk.
Kids love to see that you are proud of them. So, whenever you see some progress in this field, make sure to tell them they are awesome for doing that. When it comes to special motivational narratives, many kids can’t wait to grow up – and if you present potty training as a big step in growing up, perhaps they will try harder to succeed faster.
4. Use stickers.
It’s never easy with boys. You can train them to use the toilet but things can get messy with the aiming. Now, do some googling and find your little boy some fun toilet stickers. It helps them stay focused and they usually see it as a challenging game.
5. Pay attention to the clock.
We are beings of habits, and it is essential when it comes to potty training, especially with the #2. Moms normally schedule potty training before bath time and it usually works, so it’s a good time to start. If you notice that your child prefers to go at some other time of the day, follow their cues, even if it means rescheduling bath time. Once you catch that perfect moment, try repeating it over the next days and weeks so it would become a routine.
6. Find the perfect spot.
While going potty is an extremely private thing and most kids prefer to be hidden in the bathroom while doing it, some of them are simply not ready to go straight to the bathroom. Some of them like the potty to be placed somewhere where they spend most of their time, for instance, in their room, surrounded by toys.
Try relocating the potty step by step, closer and closer to the bathroom.
7. Reduce sugary foods.
Sugar has loads of negative impacts, which sometimes includes constipation. Focus on vegetables and grains instead, as these foods are known for their regulation of digestion. With regular meals, given approximately at the same time every day, you shouldn’t have such problems.
8. Come up with additional potty activities.
Kids usually get bored sitting on a potty and need something additional to keep them occupied. Make sure to give them a toy they like to play with or perhaps some play-doh so they wouldn’t nag about being bored. It will make things easier for both of you. Singing along may also help.
9. Make things fun.
Potty training is a big change in a child’s life, and therefore it can be stressful. Tell them a funny story or some jokes to help them relax and draw their attention from high expectations.
10. Feel for the right time.
So, you have tried everything and nothing worked. What could be the problem? It is most likely that your child simply isn’t ready yet. Try again in a few weeks or months. Perfect timing is everything.
