Each year, October brings us the same old challenge – how to help our kids make the best out of their Halloween and flaunt a costume they will really like. Plus, as parents, we have to make sure the costumes will fit our budgets as well. And, of course, it’s great if we don’t have to spend weeks on preparing those costumes.
The Internet is full of creative ideas, so you don’t have to end up telling your little one “Sorry, baby, you’ll have to go as a ghost”.
I’ve assembled a list of quick, simple, affordable yet stunning Halloween costume ideas you can have in no time.
DIY ideas Halloween costumes
Shooting star
This one was one of the cutest costumes I’ve stumbled upon. The costume consists of a dress and a headband with a cardboard star. The rest is up to your imagination. You can decorate some of your daughter’s old dresses with golden details, ribbons, textile glitter, flowers or more cardboard stars.
The Incredibles
This option is convenient both for boys and girls. In fact, the best option if the entire family syncs and dresses up as the Incredibles. The costume is easy to make, and you probably have everything you need for it somewhere in your home.
Poppy from Trolls
This one does require some time – maybe you’ll need an entire afternoon to make it. Although you are starting from scratch, the good news is that you have to use a glue gun instead of a sewing machine to assemble the costume parts. It’s adorable, and not to mention how popular Trolls animated film still is among the children.
Robot
Robots are, next to superheroes, among the most popular costumes for boys throughout the decades behind us. As this fashion doesn’t seem to have an expiration date, you can always try this option. If you have a big box and some aluminum foil, you already have almost everything you need to make the costume.
Harry Potter
One of the most iconic modern literary and film characters can actually be easily imitated for Halloween. You don’t have to worry a lot about the outfit – any white shirt and black west will work. A Gryffindor scarf and round glasses, however, are necessary. And don’t forget to draw the scar!
Rainbow mermaid
Here is another original yet simple idea that won’t take more than 3 hours and $20. No sewing is required, so you will be able to make it even if you have never made a Halloween costume on your own. In addition, this costume is different (and more interesting) than typical mermaid costumes you can buy online.

Scarecrow
If you and your kids are into keeping costumes in the real spirit of Halloween spookiness, this costume might be your next favorite. You will find adorable Scarecrow options both for girls and boys.
Baby pumpkin
Maybe your baby is too young for trick or treating but it is never too early to get into that holiday spirit. This handmade pumpkin costume might make your baby fall in love with Halloween before they even become aware of it. The costume is made for both boys and girls.
Peanut butter & jelly
Some of us prefer humor over spookiness when choosing Halloween costumes for our kids. This one is witty, practical, comfortable and comes in the pack of two at the price of one, so if you are a parent of two, you can take care of both of them at the same time.
Bumblebee
This costume may be common but it always works and makes people say “awww”. Whether you have a girl or a boy, you can count on loads of adorableness and buzz with this costume. Toddlers particularly love it.
Dragon
Most kids will be into fairy tale costumes, but they will usually want to be princes and princesses. Not many of them will choose to be the dragon for a day, which is a pity, as dragon costume can really make your child’s Halloween extra cute! I’m definitely saving this one as an option.
Astronaut
I love this one because it is more than just a costume. It is a nice way to inspire your children to dream big. Maybe this costume will be the first step to introduce your child to science and the amazing space facts. There is an option both for girls and boys.
Whichever costume option you and your little ones choose, hope you will have a splendid holiday in the family and community spirit!
