Why do you, parents, need to connect with your child?
If you’re a parent, then the struggle of striving to be the perfect mom or dad might be familiar to you. When parents are giving up to the societal norms and pressures for being perfect, they’re missing out on the fact that perfection is not always the best. If the focus is on managing behaviour, parents can forget to connect with your child.
Some parents may fail to connect with your child, because they assume that it might allow the child to become ill-mannered and misbehaved, which truly is not the case. This is the biggest mistake that parents commit. When a child does not connect with his parents mentally, physically, and emotionally, he will look for that bond elsewhere. And then he may take himself away from the parents and involve in other activities or people who might not be correct for them.
This is the main reason why expert child psychologists always suggest the parents to be close to their children. Parents who connect with your child are more in tune with their needs, demands, and nature, than anyone else. As parents, we need to be able to create a beautiful, honest, and frank closeness with them.
Here are some of the tips that will help you know how you can connect with your children.
Listen to their concerns:
Listening to your child’s concerns, childish or genuine, makes them feel emotionally secure. They feel as though they have someone by their side. This habit allows them to share whatever they feel like without feeling ashamed of whom they really are.
When you, as a parent, connect with your child, you raise confident and happy children who have no fear of being ridiculed for their natural thinking. Remember that if you won’t listen to your children or give them time, there are chances that they will get close to someone else. In this way you will not be able to have the beautiful relationship that you have always desired. There will come a time when your kids will start ignoring you.
Help them figure out their curiosities:
Curiosity is natural in kids as they’re new to this world, unlike the parents who are experienced and well-aware of things around them. So if your child is curious about something that you think might not be in his best interest, it’s better to explain that to him in a kind and friendly way, rather than scolding or forbidding it. Then they may not go behind your back or hide their investigations, and possibly get hurt.
Your child will have millions of questions in his mind and most of them will be silly and childish. You might get irritated but it is better that you plan a question-and-answer session every day. If you plan for it, and take the time to answer their questions, your child will gain trust in you. He will also learn to respect that you need your time. And he will get all the answers to his questions. It will help you connect with your child positively.
Laugh with them:
Laughing together is the best thing. It helps you to connect with your child comfortably . When your child feels that the parents are genuinely connecting with them by laughing together on routine day jokes, they enjoy being with their parents.
Let your kids tell you their jokes and make sure that you laugh at all of them. As well as you can tickle your child or let him tickle you to have a good time together
Be yourself:
Don’t try to become what you are not. This might push your child into thinking that the parents are not comfortable with him. Kids are smart. If they think you are pretending to be someone else who otherwise is perfect, they may think you are just faking the relationship.
Don’t just listen but share:
Sharing your life experiences and daily routine with the child makes them think that the parents are equally interested in them. The conversations and interactions are not forced. And the child will believe that his parents want to connect with him, and aren’t forcing themselves into becoming their friend, just for the improved mental and emotional stability.
Appreciate:
Appreciation and encouragement can do wonder even in the toughest of times when the child finds it hard to seek motivation. Parents who appreciate their child and encourage them to move forward raise confident and creative humans. And they will see a better future for them.
Being close to your child should be considered an important aspect of good parenting. You are the only hope and sunshine for your child. They could easily get discouraged on the uncertain happenings of life. But if you connect with your child, you can raise happy, confident children.
