With Halloween approaching, parents all over the world are facing a huge question – how many sweets is too many? If you ask me, reduce them as much as you can. Let the Halloween costumes be scary, not the health hazards coming through sugar. You don’t have to expose your children or the children who come trick or treating to the short-term satisfaction and long-term sugar addiction.
I did some research and came up with some pretty great options, actually.
Here are some healthy Alternatives to Halloween sweets:
Pumpkin chocolate chip muffins
These are a great contributions to the holiday spirit and on top of it they taste amazing.
You will need 3 cups of flour, 4 eggs, 16 ounces of canned pumpkin, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1 cup of vegetable oil, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of salt, 12 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Mix the dry ingredients together, and mix the rest of the ingredients in a separate bowl. Mix everything together and bake the mixture in the muffin molds. It took me around 15-20 minutes to bake them at the 400F temperature.
Honey sticks
Another organic solution for avoiding unhealthy sugars among your Halloween treats is purchasing honey sticks.
I think I’ll get my hands on Wildflower Honey Stix this year. They can be found for 0.25 cents per piece, which is more than a decent price for the benefits I’ll get in the box, knowing that I’m not contributing to children’s obesity by giving the sticks out.
Home-made Bounty candy bars
Another recipe I will definitely try this Halloween is a much healthier alternative to the popular candy bar.
For these, you will need ¾ cup of semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips, ½ cup of unsweetened shredded coconut, ¼ cup of organic coconut oil plus a bit of organic honey. Mix the coconut, oil and honey in a bowl. Melt the chocolate and coat the bar mold with it. Leave it in your fridge for 10 minutes. When the chocolate hardens, put the coconut mixture inside. Cover it with some more chocolate and leave it in the fridge for a bit more.
Sugar-free fruit chews
One of my friends is totally hooked on fruit chews and recently she has introduced me to a sugar-free option that doesn’t differ in taste from the standard version. It is also a budget-friendly option, with the prices going around $20. You will get approximately 140 pieces per package.
Fruit snacks
There must be some kids in your neighborhood with food allergies, so you must be extra careful when giving them Halloween candy. I found an all-natural treat called Fruit-A-Peel, which meets all the standards of a healthy snack – in a nutshell. This means that there is no added sugars, no gluten, no artificial coloring or flavors, no GMO. They come in 7 exotic flavors.
Healthy snack bars
If you pay attention to your health, you have probably already replaced sugary candies with granola bars or similar healthy alternatives. It is a convenient option for Halloween as well. You can buy them in bulk to save up, and the boxes usually come with diverse flavors.
Anti-cavity lollipops
Now, these lollies are a way to trick someone with a treat. Being delicious, Zollipops don’t differ from regular lollipops – except for the fact that they have stevia instead of sugar, they are GMO-free, gluten-free and contain xylitol. Xylitol is helping children maintain the health of their teeth. Well, this solves one of the most common Halloween problems – sudden urgent dentist appointments!
Snack boxes
If you are indecisive about the type of healthy snacks you would like to give out on Halloween then you don’t have to make that choice. You can check out snack boxes that come with a variety of treats, from granola bars to fruit snacks, at an affordable price. These are usually hand-picked and include a variety of trustworthy brands as well.
Bonus options
Fruits
Not all the kids will immediately be happy if they receive fruits but you don’t have to give up such practice. It is important to help the children become aware of the importance of a healthy diet from their earliest age. Why shouldn’t we do it on Halloween?
Toys
More and more people give out toys and fun items that are not within the regular Halloween treats menu. And, guess what, the kids are still happy! You can consider something creating such as Play-Doh or something timeless such as bouncy balls, which are also pretty cheap within the bulk purchases.
Finally, eliminating sugar from Halloween doesn’t mean you’ll take away all the fun. It just means you are redefining it, and, with all the devastating stats on children’s obesity and other sugar-related health issues, we could all use that redefinition. Let’s stay responsible to our kids and teach them sugar has much better alternatives!
