Fun Science Experiments For Kids During COVID-19

COVID-19 continues to spread worldwide, so there is lockdown all over the globe. This has left the responsibility to parents for amusing and entertaining their kids at home.
Kids find it hard to understand science to the real world; some simple and fun science experiments can be done at home with household stuff to show the concept of science to kids in our daily lives.

Keep your kid’s busy and learning by trying out some of the following fun science experiments for kids during COVID-19.

Glue and Borax Experiment

The glue and borax experiment is done to show the difference between a chemical and physical change to the kids.

Physical changes are about energy and visible changes related to solids, liquids, or gasses, such as the melting of an ice cube. While, on the other hand, chemical changes are usually long-lasting and permanent, and occur at a more extreme stage, including variations in color.

Materials needed

  • Borax soap or in any other form if available
  • Water
  • Microwave oven
  • Glue
  • Two bowls
  • Spoon or rod for stirring
  • Food color of your choice
  • Gloves to avoid the mess

Procedure to follow

  1. Mix borax with water: take a container and add two inches of water in it. Add one teaspoon of borax soap and set the mixture aside after heating it for one minute in the microwave oven.
  2. Mix glue with water: Take another container and add two inches of glue and eight teaspoons of water in it. Add fifteen drops of food color of your choice and mix well.
  3. Mix all the mixtures: the mixture after mixing the materials of both containers will make “flubber”

Launch Balloon Rockets

Do you know the shape of the balloon affect how far a rocket travels? What will the angle of string which tells you how it moves?

When the air is released, your balloon makes a pushing force called thrust.

This experiment will help you to absorb these questions better.

Materials needed

  • Balloon
  • A long piece of string
  • Tape
  • Straws

Procedure to follow

  1. Tie the string: tie the one end of the string to any strong support and the other one with the straw.
  2. Blow your balloon: blow up your balloon and hold from the end to keep air secured inside
  3. Tape your balloon: now tape your balloon with the straw, it is ready to launch
  4. Let go of the balloon: let go of the balloon from the end and watch it.

Invisible ink with lemon drops

You can do a lot of fun with invisible ink, as you keep all your secret texts and messages hidden from others, you can pretend like a magician or a secret agent. All you need is lemon juice’s hidden power and some other essential items. Lemon, an organic substance, changes into brown due to oxidation on heating.

Materials needed

  • Lemon
  • Water
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Bowl
  • Cotton bud
  • White paper
  • bulb

Procedure to follow

  1. Squeeze lemon juice: Take a bowl and squeeze lemon juice followed by the addition of few drops of water.
  2. Stir well: Stir the lemon juice and water together well.
  3. Write a message: write a message on white paper after dipping the cotton bud into the mixture of lemon juice and water.
  4. Read a message: When you want to read a message, heat it in the bulb’s light. The words will become visible.

Sun Dial

The light of the sun will cast a shadow over the long stick across the dial. The shadow will change its angle depending on how light from the sun reaches the stick. The effect occurs due to the spinning and revolving of the earth around the sun all the time.

Materials needed

  • Almost two feet long straight stick
  • Small rocks
  • Chalk, sand, and bucket (optional)
  • A watch

Procedure to follow

  1. Place the stick vertically: Find a sunny spot in your garden or any open place near the house. Place the stick vertically in the ground or grass.
  2. Alternate: If you do not find any ground or grassy area, fill the bucket with sand and place the stick in it.
  3. Start marking the spots: Start with the sunrise. Use a small rock to mark the shadow after every hour. You can also use a chalk as an alternate of the pebbles for marking the shadow spots.
  4. Complete the sundial: by the end of the day, with the sunset; your sundial will be complete.

Enjoy these easy fun science experiments for kids during COVID-19 at home! Stay home, stay safe!
