Staying home with your kids and working at the same time is potentially getting the best of both worlds. You can always be there for your children and you can build up a decent career. But how do you find a job as a stay-at-home mom?
Being a blogger and a mom, I can witness that this lifestyle brings you lots of freedom to organize your business and family time according to your needs. Here are some things to get you orientated.
How to choose a job you can do from home?
Focus on things you know, regardless of your formal educations. Maybe you have studied economy but maybe you also have some great stories to write and share on a blog. This is your opportunity to turn your hobby into a source of income.
When you are choosing your job, make sure it is something you can also do fast, something that won’t take away too much of your time.
What are the best jobs for stay-at-home moms?
Here are some of the options that bring decent money and leave you enough time to spend it with your kids.
Freelancing online
Freelancing websites offer a variety of options, from writing to coding, from transcribing audio materials to graphic design. You can register on platforms that cover virtually every skill you can sell online (Freelancer, Fiverr and similar websites) or choose platforms for more specific skills (99 Designs, Translatorsbase etc).
Social media marketing
Check out with some local businesses if they need a social media manager or community manager – that could be your first gig. Later you can set up your own website where you can advertise your services and post your portfolio. Over the course of time, you and turn it into a serious source of income. All you need is to be a social media buff yourself!
Running an Etsy shop
It has never been easier to run your own online shop, even if you don’t really know how to code and set up websites. With platforms such as Etsy, a good idea for the products you will sell is the most difficult part of the job. The good news is that unique, handmade products that are easily made at home (and don’t require lots of investments) are very popular and can be charged decently.
Online tutoring
This job as a stay-at-home mom usually (but not always) requires you to have a degree in the field. You can teach anything, from foreign languages to science, and you can focus on working with people of any age. Platforms such as TutorMe allow you to make flexible schedules and get in charge of your working style.
Pet sitting
This can be a bit inconvenient if your kids are really small, so I wouldn’t recommend it to baby moms. If your kids are already in pre-school or school, this option can come in handy. You cannot earn a lot, but it can supplement your budget decently.
Hosting Airbnb
If you have some extra space, why not? However, you need to make sure the space you are renting is separated from the space you and your family are using, as you don’t want strangers to walk around your personal area all the time, especially if your children are still little.
Being a virtual assistant
Office experience is desirable but not mandatory for this type of job as a stay-at-home mom. Being highly responsible and organized, on the other hand, is the key to being successful in this position. The job implies regular office tasks – making schedules, replying to emails, dealing with different data – but without having to visit the office.
Being food photographer
You can do this as a part of your daily routine – after you cook a meal, you might as well take some stunning photos of it. Post the photos on different stock websites and you will start receiving money as your photos get downloaded by the users.
Being a blogger
From my experience, it is one of the jobs that provide you with the highest level of freedom to organize your time and do what you really enjoy. However, it requires lots of self-discipline as well and comes with numerous challenges. So, when you are starting a blog, make sure to choose a niche you are really good at and topics that will keep you going. After making a blog with quality content, you will be able to monetize it.
