18 Amazing Ways to Boost your Child’s Creativity

Encourage your children to be creative!

In order to help your children develop their imagination and resourcefulness, you should encourage your children to be creative as much as possible. Help them engage in creative activities whenever you can! It’s great for their self-expression, and emotional development. And their crafts will eventually become great childhood memories. And, who knows, maybe you are raising a little Picasso!

Here are some easy ways to get your children interested in creative activities:

1. Read to them

Make reading a family ritual. Children who get familiar with the books in their early childhood grow to be more curious and free to use their imagination.

2. Take them to art shows

Besides specialized galleries for children, there are numerous galleries and museums organizing art events for the young ones. And many of them give kids a chance to participate in art/craft classes.

3. Have a Craft Day once a week

Help your kids practice creativity as a regular part of their lives. Pick a day, look around the house to find some useful materials, maybe surf the internet for some inspiration and make magic!

4. Tell your kids how things work

By introducing your kids to simple machines and basic mechanics, you entice their curiosity and help them develop their own thought perspective.

5. Play loads of music to them

Find some appropriate tunes and make them a part of your kids’ daily lives. It will encourage them to get creative by singing or dancing.

6. Get them some music instruments

A simple xylophone, harmonica or toy guitar are enough to get children interested in making music. Even if they only make noise at first, it can be the beginning of a beautiful thing.

7. Get them some Legos

It’s best if you can find those basic regular bricks rather than ready-made Lego figures, as they will certainly give your kids more creative freedom.

8. Display the crafty items your kids make

If your kid’s shell photo frame stands on the shelf in the living room so everybody can see it, your kid will know their creative work means something. Let them know you’re proud of their efforts!

9. Encourage them to learn a new language

Learning foreign languages helps kids improve their abstract thinking, which relates to creativity.

10. Let your kids invent their own games

Kids don’t always play by the rules – and that’s great for their creative development. Ask your kids if they want to invent a completely new game of their own and help them get everything necessary.

11. Let them do things on their own

If your child doesn’t know how to draw, for instance, a cat, don’t do it instead of them. Encourage them to try harder or find the beauty in the “flawed” version they can draw.

12. Don’t be a harsh critic

If you constantly point out “mistakes” your child makes while trying to express themselves creatively, that can be counterproductive and discourage them from further attempts.

13. Take them to art classes

See which creative discipline interests your child the most and find a course in your community. Growing creative with other kids can be extra stimulating.

14. Play a role

Your child pretends to be someone else? Seems like you have a little actor besides you! Play along, come up with a role for yourself and act with them.

15. Ask questions

Time for you to be creative – come up with a list of regular or completely crazy questions (“What if cats could talk”). Enjoy while your child employs all of their creativity to come up with the answers!

16. Spend time outdoors

Besides the fact that it’s healthy, it’s good for your kids because it keeps them away from the tech and its ready-made solutions and fun. Let your kids come up with their own ways to have fun.

17. Create creative space in your home

Creativity often comes with a cost in the form of a big mess. Find a corner in your home to make it a pro-mess zone, where your children know they can make masterpieces without fearing that they’ll get stuff dirty.

18. Don’t force your child to do arts or crafts they hate

So, maybe your kid is not brilliant at playing the piano but maybe they are perfect at drawing. Maybe they are not good at any traditional art but maybe their unique thoughts are virtually an art form. Let them choose.

All the kids are creative.

It is in the human nature to get to know the world through creative assumptions, discoveries and reflection. Support your children whichever form of creative expression they choose, as doing creative stuff they like contributes to their overall well-being.

These are indeed very helpful tips. I always make it a point to engage my little one in doing something creative as much as I can. That way he stays busy and keeps learning a lot.

Great job momma! Creativity is one of the key elements of learning. The more he can develop his creativity, the better he’ll do in school and later in life.

You’re right that we’re all born creative and that we gett weaned away from it as we grow. Thanks for helping us steer kids toward that positive creative instinct! 😀

Why do we discourage creativity? Maybe we’re afraid of the mess? Creativity is often messy, but it doesn’t have to be.
