Best Family Christmas Advent Calendars

Christmas is literally at our doorstep, meaning it is almost time for one of the most beloved Christmas traditions – using Christmas advent calendars.  If you still haven’t got one, now is the perfect moment. I am not too skillful in making advent calendars, so I don’t rely on DIY options.

Luckily, the online market is full of differently designed options that are not too expensive and do make a nice addition to the spirit of the season.

As I really enjoy searching for advent calendars, now I have more of them on my list than I need for the next several years – so I am sharing them with you, hoping that it will help you pick the right calendar for your family.

Classical & inexpensive advent calendars

  • Advent calendar coloring book

If you have two or more kids, maybe you will want one of these for each child. A new day – a new illustration for them to color!

  • Winter’s Night pop-up calendar

This advent calendar is traditionally designed, with “windows”, beautifully depicted Christmas Eve motifs and stickers to decorate the winter night scene. It was designed by an award-winning artist Beth Krommes, and although I haven’t heard of her before, I can make my guess why she has deserved all those awards!

  • North Pole Friends standing advent calendar

Simply and functionally designed, this standing calendar has windows with verses of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” hidden behind them. It is great if your kids are very young and have yet to learn about Christmas traditions.

  • Madelaine Chocolate Advent Calendar

There is a bit of chocolate behind each of the 24 windows – and it would be perfect if we could all stick to the daily dose of that chocolate.

  • Canine Christmas Tree Advent Calendar

Behind the sweetly designed front with adorable puppies, there are the verses of the poem “A Puppies Christmas”.

Harmony Advent Calendar

Cat lovers have a great option as well with these fabulous cats singing a Christmas carol. Behind their mysterious windows is a poem called “A Kittens Christmas”.

Atypical mid-expensive advent calendars

  • Scandinavian Style Advent Calendar

In Scandinavian countries, 24 Christmas socks are filled with little gifts of your choice and today you can find this type of calendars online at decent prices.

  • Advent Calendar Bags

This option is pretty retro – before cardboard advent calendars became popular, this was how our ancestors did their countdown to Christmas. You are in charge of creating the content of each bag.

  • Felt Christmas Tree Advent Calendar

Designed as a flat wall decoration with pockets for you to fill with Christmas treats, this handmade advent calendar is a stylish addition to general Christmas atmosphere.

  • Large Advent Calendar with Boxes

Beautifully designed with all the Christmas symbols, this calendar is a set of drawers where you can put mints, chocolates and other things you think will make your family happy as they are waiting for Christmas.

  • Hyggewald

Instead of getting a small present or reading verses each of the 24 days, how about planting a tree via your advent calendar? Hyggewald or Swedish forest allows you to plant (or, well, glue) one small tree figure every day in December. By Christmas, you will have a beautiful forest!

  • Mery Grinchmas Advent Calendar

Inspired by the works of Dr. Seuss, this advent calendar comes with pockets, each of them with Grinch illustrations, and with a doll you can use to mark the date.

Expensive advent calendars

  • Byer’s Choice Advent Calendar

Made of wood, this advent calendar is a clever investment for the future winters, as it will last for years.

  • Wooden Drawers Advent Calendar

Another long-lasting, high-quality advent calendar, this one comes in red and white, matching classical Christmas decorations. Having drawers of different sizes, it allows you to surprise your family with different types of content – from verses and notes to bigger candy bars.

  • Nativity Wooden Calendar

This advent calendar may seem too minimalistic at first sight – however, it comes with a small magnetic figure for each day. You can arrange the figures as you wish and enrich the design to match your own taste.

Are you ready to start the countdown? I’ve picked the advent calendar for this years’ Christmas, however, I am still thinking how to fill it.

Do you have any tips what to put behind the advent windows? Go ahead, feel free to write about it in the comments!
