How to Set Up the Best Easter Egg Hunt Yet

I can’t wait for Easter!

With the Easter being right behind the corner, I can say I am probably more excited about the Easter egg hunt than my kids. Each year I’m trying to do something new to make things more interesting and each year is better than the last one.

In fact, I feel like we are hosting our own little community festival, as many kids from the neighborhood, as well as their parents, usually join the party.

How do we do it around here? We tend to introduce not just more fun into the game but also to be maximally responsible in different ways. Below are some of our usual guidelines for a spectacular Easter egg hunt.

Avoid standard sugary prizes.

Easter egg hunt prizes are still a synonym for sugary products. I’m trying to avoid sugar as much as possible and that’s why the prizes of our egg hunts are usually non-edible. Sometimes it’s a board game, sometimes it’s a nice toy, sometimes it’s a book.

If I include any desserts, I make sure they are healthy, sugar-free or at least with the minimal amount of sugar.

During the holidays, it is too easy to forget how bad sugar can be for us. And, well, I understand that, but it’s about time we start acting responsibly when it comes to our children’s health.

Team up with parents from the neighborhood.

The more, the merrier! Organizing Easter egg hunt can be a nice tradition you can develop in your community – and maybe your children will continue it one day. It is also a practical thing to do, as parents can divide responsibilities and get things done more efficiently. You can also split the costs. Overall speaking, nowadays I cannot even imagine the hunt without at least a dozen kids from our street.

Think outside the yard.

If you engage in merging families from the neighborhood for the hunt, you will probably need more than your house and yard. Perhaps the park or playground nearby could be your perfect location.

You can still decorate such spaces but make sure to clean everything after you are done (which shouldn’t be a problem if there’s so many of you). Also, when choosing the park or playground, make sure it is far from any dangerous traffic zones – better safe than sorry.

Limit the hunting space.

While a big park sounds great, you don’t want the kids to wander off as they are searching for the eggs. That’s why you need to mark the exact boundaries of the space where you have hidden the treasures. It is best if you don’t put any decoration outside that space either. Also, at least a couple of adults should be in charge of watching the group and making sure no one will go too far.

Code the eggs.

Last year, we used different stickers for children of different ages. You could do that or you could have different colored eggs for children of different age. Or, for instance, use different colors for children from different parts of the streets.

The idea is to make the hunt more challenging and you are always free to come up with your own rules. You could also use a special marker to add some letters to every egg so children could create words as they collect them.

Decorate smartly.

We decorate the space we use for the Easter egg hunt every year, yet, it was never a part of our budget. So we reuse many of the old decorations but we also create some new DIY pieces. We decided it is totally redundant to buy more and more plastics and contribute to global pollution. Plus, finding old decorations and making new ones are great activities to get you into the mood for Easter. After the hunt is over, pack the decoration carefully – you will probably want to reuse them next year.

Keep track of your eggs and other hidden stuff.

The decorations are not the only thing you need to remove after the hunt – you don’t want to leave any eggs either. Whether you are organizing the hunt inside or outside of your house, you certainly don’t want to waste them and let them rot. Sketch yourself a little map or write down the list of all the spots where you have hidden everything.
