Hi there! How are you doing today? Up for some summer activities? I’m always excited to reach out to my readers and share in their day. Nothing makes my day like reading your comments and emails.
So, one of my readers (Tracy) asked me to suggest some summer activities she can try out with her young family. Her only daughter just turned 4 and she feels she is ready to get outdoors with her daughter and husband to enjoy the summer.
First of all, thanks Tracy for reaching out to me, and yes, I will oblige your request by suggesting 9 fun, pocket-friendly or no cost activities that you and your young family can engage in.
Just like Tracy, I love engaging in fun activities with my family. I have had some enjoyable ones with my family and I will encourage you to try out some or all of them.
9 fun activities you can start now:
Play hide and seek
I don’t mean the hide and seek you play indoors, no. since it is summer and the weather is friendly, why not go outside and play hide and seek with your family? You will surely enjoy this classic game that will not only wear you all out but will have you laughing all through.
Go hiking and camping
What better time to go hiking and camping than in the summer? All you need to do is ask around for some close hiking and campground. The hiking on its own is a fun activity. You might see some animals coming out of hibernating. Deciding to camp for the night or the weekend will be well worth it.
You can bring along some frozen meat, chicken, marshmallows that you can roast in the fire to be enjoyed by the whole family. And if you don’t have any hiking or campground close by, you can always set up a tent in your backyard. Just make sure that you have enough spooky and fun stories to keep the fun going.
Think gardening
It’s warmer, and is, therefore, a good time to plant something and watch it grow. Gardening allows your kids get their hands dirty and have fun planting flowers and vegetables. Who knows, they might fall in love with it and make it a lifetime habit. What better way to get your kids to eat their vegetables than the one they grew themselves?
Enjoy the light showers
There is nothing like relishing childhood memories of dancing in the rain. I did it and I know a lot of moms did it too. Why not feel like a kid again by getting yourself and your family out in the rain. You can put on your rain gear and have fun dancing in the drizzle and puddle. A nice cuddle by the fire afterward will give your kids a childhood memory to relish.
Visit amusement parks
Another fun activity you can do this summer is going to the parks with your family. It is such a nice opportunity to enjoy some much-needed family time having fun. You can pack a picnic along so that you don’t get to spend on food and drinks when you guys become hungry. If there is a river, why not allow your kids feed the ducks? Just make sure the safety measures are in place. Believe me when I tell you that everyone is going to get home happy, worn-out and ready for bed.
Visit the museum
Summer time is a good time to visit the museum and have a nice family time together. Most museums have free entry fees and so not having money for entry fee will not be an excuse. It’s time to introduce your kids to things they will soon start learning about.
Play basketball
It’s time to make use of that basketball court you have been putting off because of winter. It’s time to get your family active by getting involved in a healthy and fun activity like playing basketball. You can form two teams and try to outdo the other team. Make it more fun by lifting your child up with the ball and having her throw the ball in. Yes, you guys are cheating in the game but it’s all fun.
Try jumping rope
The weather calls for some fun activities and jumping rope is one fun and healthy activity you can have outdoors in the backyard. Turn it into a competition and see who jumps longer than others.
Take a road trip
The clear and bright weather calls for some road trip. Pack up the whole family and get on a road trip. Try out routes you have not tried out before using your GPS. The kids will love the fresh air as they watch nature in its undiluted and peaceful form.
These 9 activities will keep you and your family occupied the whole summer. I am already trying out some of them with my family and would love to read your experience in the comment section.

These are great – I especially like the dancing in the rain one. I would automatically run for shelter but I’m now going to let them all get wet and have fun!
